I built my dream home on a 6.12 rai (full chanote title) strip of idyllic Isaan rice farmland 35 km south of Korat City, halfway between Pak Thong Chai and Chok Chai, towns 10 km east and west. It is close to three worlds- the quiet Isaan rice villages, the Khao Yai & Thap Lan National Parks, and the Korat big city high life. Bangkok is now 3 hours away on the new expressway to Sikhio. The property is only 2 km from the major #24 and #2420 highways. No immediate neighbors, and views for miles with Buddhist temples’ red and gold spires poking above distant tree-lines. With wonderful sunrises, sunsets, and cloud formations born over the distant mountains. This gorgeous property is far from the hectic pace of big cities and the tourist havens, in the heart of Thailand. The built-up ground, raised area is two meters above the surrounding rice lands, and will never flood, and is like a private island. The government reservoir is 25 km away and enables the district’s twice a year rice production via an intricate and maintained network of canals. The soil is a fertile clay-loam, part of the ancient central Thai bread basket. The front half of the property was built up by excavating our lake and by skimming from other rice farms. The half rai lake is 8 meters deep and full of fish that migrate from the reservoir, stay awhile, and once a year go on to the Mekong River through the flooded rice farms. We have a 4-inch, 45 meter deep tube well with two solar panels on top of a water tower. The submersible pump fills the water tank and gravity flows into the home. Water supply independence! (Municipal water is optional too). One rai of garden lies between the house and lake, and 1.5 rai of orchard lies in front. Irrigation lines. Behind the lake is our 2.5 rai rice field which a neighbor uses (50-50 and free rice all year). In the rear is a raised island with 20 coconut trees and mangos. The mature orchard has lemon, mulberry, lime, guava, mango, lumyai, lamut, sugar apple, dragon fruit, much more. Many flowering bushes are around the house with a Buddha shrine in front. We started with 24 concrete 8-meters pilings and a massive reinforced slab to prevent any settling. Concrete columns support a steel roof structure. The walls are white AAC blocks and the concrete tile roof with attic insulation and vents all keeps the home cool. Ceilings are 3.5 meter high. The well-constructed house is 5 degrees cooler than outside. The 3 AC units in the bedrooms flow into the huge lounge area. Electric is 1000 baht/mo. The 235 sq meter home includes 153 sq meters indoor and 82 meters covered verandas on 4 sides. Three bedrooms, 2 full baths, office, kitchen, wet bar area in the main lounge, granite & tile floors, granite counters, aluminum screened & grilled windows, all teak doors. The carpark (12x20 ft) fits a pickup and motorcycles, with a storage room.
